SIFE
has the opportunity to help support Mulunda Miaka Orphanage
in Zambia, Africa through understanding how market economics
work.
Watch this YouTube video to learn more about this opportunity:
We have developed a sustainability program
that involves sponsoring
chickens in order to provide the orphanage with long-term financial
sustainability. Your donation of only $6 covers the cost of one
chicken that
can go on to produce about $9.00 in additional revenue for
the orphanage (per chicken). Each time you “give
a chicken”, you pay for the chicken as well as its
feed and medication, meaning that when the chicken or eggs
are
sold, all the profit goes directly to Mulunda Miaka Orphanage.
One batch of these chickens consists of 200 chickens that are
cared for and raised for about 6 weeks, before another batch
is purchased. Details and resources about how this process
works are listed below.

Challenges
One of the greatest challenges to this project is working half-a-world
away. The way business and society works in Zambia is much
different than in the United States. Things often
take much longer and communication will often be more of a
challenge.
We are dealing with exchange rates and loose time tables.
We will continually update this website to provide you with
the
most up-to-date information possible.
Timeline
The owners of the MM Orphanage are ready to start raising
these chickens. Once we receive the sponsorship for the first batch
of 200 chickens,
we will transfer the money to them to allow them to begin the process
of raising these chickens.
Why Chickens? Zambia is a land locked country located in central southern
Africa. Chickens are a staple food and a main source of protein
in the Zambian diet. They also serve as a viable revenue source.
At Mulunda Miaka Orphanage, chickens and eggs will be used
for meals and will also be sold to help the orphanage be self-sustainable.
There are two primary types of chickens raised in Zambia- Chickens
raised for meat, called Broilers, and Chickens used for collecting
eggs, called Layers. Both types will be raised at Mulunda Miaka
Orphanage, and both provide a viable mean of raising money.
Broiler Chickens
Broilers are purchased when they are just a day old. Careful attention
must be paid to their health in the first two weeks, including
extra lighting for warmth. Provided with ample food and water,
Broiler chickens are full grown and ready to be sold within about
6 weeks of being purchased. 100 Broiler chickens can provide a
profit of almost $400 in just 6 weeks! For many in Zambia, that
represents more than a months salary. Mulunda Miaka Orphanage will
purchase Broilers in stages so that every few weeks they are able
to sell more chickens.
Layer Chickens
Layer chickens are raised primarily for their eggs. Purchased when
they are six weeks old, Layers will lay on average one egg a day
for about a year. These eggs are collected daily and sold in the
marketplace. Once Layers stop laying eggs, they can be sold for
meat. A layer chicken brings in an average of $28 in a year, meaning
100 layers will bring in a profit of almost $2,800 in one year!
All things considered, over the course of a year,
Broilers and Layers provide a comparable revenue stream. When Mulunda
Miaka Orphanage is completed, they will raise both types of chickens.
Diets
Many children in developing countries lack adequate meat in their
diet, and often become malnourished. Chickens provide a viable,
affordable source of protein to children and adults alike.
Your Donation
Your donation of a chicken will pay for a broiler chick, its transportation,
medication, feed, and Paypal fees. Because of your donation, all
profits from each chicken that is sold goes directly to Mulunda
Miaka Orphanage.
SIFE Teams Compete? AU SIFE would be willing to work out a contest between
other SIFE teams in the area in order to see who could sponsor
the most chickens. If you are interested,
